MP McMahon launches cost of living survey for constituents

Date published: 02 December 2022

The Office of National Statistics recently released the results of a survey showing that nearly three in every five people in deprived areas are spending less on food and essentials.

Oldham is one of the more deprived areas in the country, with one in every three children living in poverty.

In response to the statistics, Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon has today launched a survey to determine the real lived experience of people in his constituency.

The survey, which can be accessed using the link here, will allow Mr McMahon’s constituents to share their lived experience on cost of living issues.

Speaking before the launch of the survey, Mr McMahon said: “With Christmas just around the corner, this is usually a time when people are looking forward to spending time with friends and family, but for many people this year, worry won’t be too far from their minds.

“Because of the Conservative made cost of living crisis, it has been an incredibly difficult period of time for many in Chadderton, Oldham and Royton, with many people having to make cutbacks.

"While Oldham’s Labour Council’s ‘We Can Help Scheme’ is providing some much-needed support, there is a lot more that the Conservative Government needs to step up and do.

“I’m launching this survey today so that I can get more information about people’s day to day lived experiences and inform my work in Parliament on the issue in the coming weeks and months.

"I’d encourage all of my constituents to fill out the survey.”
