Helping to put children first this half-term

Date published: 27 October 2022

St James' Labour Councillor Angela Cosgrove has done her bit in helping ensure that children in the ward are getting a meal this half term through her work at Stoneleigh Park in Derker.

During the cost-of-living crisis, many parents have spoken to Cllr Cosgrove about their fears during half term, when children are at home instead of at school.

At the Autumn Holiday Club events that have been organised in Stoneleigh Park by Friends of Stoneleigh Park and Derker Community Gardens, Cllr Cosgrove has been one of the many people volunteering their time to ensure that children in Derker have somewhere to go this week, and that they are fed when they may go without.

Speaking after a holiday club session, Cllr Cosgrove said: "It has been really disheartening to hear parents from across the ward tell me that this is possibly the only hot meal their child will have this week due to the rising energy and food costs.

"When parents are choosing between eating or heating, the least we can do is ensure that children aren't losing out on meals by providing food and some activities for them here in the park."

Oldham council has invested £3million in a "We can help" package of support for families who are struggling with their household bills, food and staying warm during the cost-of-living crisis.
