Full cupboards for FoodCycle thanks to Miller Homes

Date published: 11 October 2022

Miller Homes has helped to fill the cupboards of FoodCycle’s Oldham branch, which is based at the Primrose Centre at Magnolia Gardens and opens at 6pm every Tuesday.

The homebuilder, currently working on its Briar View development in Shaw, contributed tinned foods, long-life milk cartons, sauces, as well as lentils, pasta, and rice to the charity to support their valuable community work.

FoodCycle is a national organisation that is known to be ‘more than a food bank’.

Together with the help of local businesses and generous volunteers, the registered charity uses surplus food to cook free vegetarian meals for the community; helping to both alleviate food poverty and to bring people together at the same time – tackling loneliness as well as hunger.

In 2021, FoodCycle saved 191 tonnes of food from going to waste, and served countless vulnerable people across the country, with a total of 63,880 volunteer hours logged.

Miller Homes stepped in to help support the organisation’s vital work, stocking their cupboards full of basic ingredients that they can pair with fresh ingredients every week to keep those in need in the community fed.

20kg of rice, lentils and pasta has been donated, alongside many tins of chopped tomatoes and kidney beans, jars of vegetarian-friendly cooking sauces and cartons of both UHT cow and plant-based milk.

Ian Winstanley, Regional Manager for FoodCycle, said: “Our work serving the good people of Oldham every week is vital here at FoodCycle, so we were delighted that Miller Homes reached out to offer help.

"We’re always really grateful to companies that step in to help the local charities and organisations in the community, it demonstrates a really kind nature.”

Clare Noakes, Miller Homes’ Sales Director for the North West, added: “Briar View is a really new development, and those who know us as homebuilder know how important local community work is to us.

"We’ve loved being able to support FoodCycle and are looking forward to a longstanding relationship with them as well as other good causes in the Shaw and Oldham communities.”
