Local MP McMahon - Tory government are 'out of touch' with Oldhamers

Date published: 05 October 2022

Labour MP for Oldham West and Royton Jim McMahon has slammed the Government as being 'out of touch' following Prime Minister Liz Truss's eagerly-awaited speech at the Conservative Party Conference.

In her speech, Ms Truss promised to get the country through "stormy days", as she vowed to take on the "anti-growth coalition".

Also in the speech, which has been marked by U-turns and internal division, the PM admitted her policies would cause "disruption".

But she said "the status quo is not an option" and "we must stay the course".

Unsurprisingly, Mr McMahon responded with disdain.

He said: “Liz Truss’ speech at the Conservative Party Conference today was yet another indication that this government is completely out of touch with working people in Chadderton, Oldham and Royton.

"She has been at the heart of a Conservative government that has spent 12 years building a low wage, low growth economy and working families will be paying the price for years to come as mortgages hit their highest levels for 14 years while food and fuel prices remain sky high.

"The Tories need to reverse their kamikaze trickle-down economics budget immediately and instead focus on what they can do to help ordinary working people keep their heads above water.

"This economic crisis is a Tory crisis, made in Downing Street and paid for by working people in Chadderton, Oldham and Royton.”
