An 11-strong squad were scrambled on Friday evening
The leader of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team gave a warning to walkers planning Autumn visits to the moors after a dramatic late night incident.
An 11-strong squad were scrambled on Friday evening after an alert from Greater Manchester Police of reports that two females and two dogs were lost in the Dovestones area of Saddleworth in the dark, without torches.
Fortunately, GMP had been able to triangulate the general location of their phone signal as near Dean Rocks, before their battery ran out.
OMRT were swiftly in the area and, after a short search, one of the team’s fast parties heard shouts for help in the clough between Dean Rocks and Ashway Moss.
At the same time, the National Police Air Service helicopter arrived on scene and provided overhead lighting for the short, if tricky, walk out.
The casualties and dogs were checked over at OMRT vehicles before being given a lift back to their car.
Speaking after the incident, Rob Tortoiseshell, OMRT leader who headed the search (pictured below), said: “It is that time of year again when the nights are starting to draw in quickly, even at the end of the brightest of days.
“If you are heading out into the hills, make sure you are prepared.
“Check your route and what is involved: Is it within your capabilities? Do you have enough time to finish in daylight?
"Tell someone where you are going and the time you expect to return.
“Take the right kit: Do you have waterproofs and spare warm clothing? Wear appropriate footwear for the terrain.
"Take a map and compass - and know how to use them.
“Mobile phone apps and GPS devices are useful but cannot be relied on in cold and wet conditions.
“Carry a torch in case you do get caught out by fading light and do check the weather.
"Be prepared to adapt or postpone your trip if the weather is poor.”
And he added: “Fully charge your mobile phone in case you need to contact the emergency services.”
The team were involved for one hour and 20 minutes.
