End-of-season plant sale at National Trust's Marsden Moor office

Date published: 13 September 2022

As we move into autumn, visitors to Marsden Moor are invited to bag themselves a bargain at the National Trust’s end-of-season sale.

Brighten up your garden with a wide selection of plants, all grown locally.

Handmade woodwork items are also for sale, including planters, bird boxes, hedgehog houses and troughs.

All the money raised from the sales will go back into the National Trust’s ongoing work to re-wet Marsden Moor and improve its resilience to fire and flooding.

Volunteers have been working hard all summer and the fruits of their labour make Marsden Moor’s office and exhibition space a colourful and vibrant place to spend a morning.

Alongside the plant group, who have grown many of the plants from cuttings, the woodwork team have handcrafted a huge variety of sturdy planters of different shapes and sizes, as well as homes for all manner of wildlife from birds to bugs, and other useful creations.

Over the last few years Marsden Moor has suffered a series of devastating fires, often caused by BBQs and fireworks.

The worst fire in 2021 burnt for three days and destroyed over two square miles of peat soils, plants and important habitats for rare birds and mammals.

Area Ranger for Marsden Moor, Ian Dowson, said: “Our volunteers dedicate many hours to put on these popular plant and woodwork sales, and it’s so great to see the support we get every year.

“All the money raised from the sales will help us restore the moorland, including areas that have been affected by fires in recent years.

“Every flower or planter bought will mean we can do more to look after Marsden Moor – including planting sphagnum moss, cutting vegetation to reduce fire load, and having regular fire patrols during the summer months.”

The end-of-season sale will run on Sunday (September 18).

Regular sales will continue every Friday from 10am to 2.30pm.
