Volunteer fundraisers Bill and Janet Heap, who were awarded MBEs earlier this year, are urging church's and community groups to get behind their 'Keep Warm Project' this coming winter.
Janet said: "We know folks in their golden years may find it difficult to heat their homes all day.
"If church's/community groups could open there buildings for an hour or two, one or more days a week, what a difference we could make to our community this winter.
"They could provide a warm and welcoming place to meet for a cuppa and snack, enabling them to keep warm, hydrated, and to meet new friends, while also reducing social isolation and loneliness.
"We would love to encourage church's and community groups around the UK to do something similar, as it's a chance as Christians to show God's love in action."
The Keep Warm Project will launch at the Dovetales Christian Centre in Shaw next month with the church opening on Wednesday and Thursday mornings between 10.30 am to 12pm to serve tea and toast.
The scheme is set to run from October through to March.
