A cancer support group from Oldham is set to stage a special documentary screening at Gallery Oldham.
The Oldham Quiet Ones are a support group dedicated to helping people in the Oldham and Manchester (and beyond) areas who have had, or currently have, throat cancer which has resulted in a Laryngectomy.
This is a surgical procedure which removes the voice box and redirects the windpipe to allow people to breathe through a fissure in the neck known as a stoma.
An Oldham Quiet Ones spokesperson said: "We are a small group, but highly active, and all our key members are Laryngectomees ('Larry's' for short).
"On October 1, in conjunction with Oldham Libraries and ATOS, we will be screening a documentary film at 'The Small Cinema’ located inside Gallery Oldham entitled ‘Can You Hear My Voice’, followed by a reception and small exhibition at which we hope to welcome some council-elected members.
"This will be the first showing of the film outside of its London premiere, and we have worked very hard to secure it for Oldham.
"The film was produced and directed by the acclaimed documentary maker Bill Brummell, himself a 'Larry’, and follows a group of people who post operatively formed the London Laryngectomy Choir and their preparation for a public concert.
"It is inspirational and demonstrates the ability of people in overcoming what would appear to be an impossible obstacle."
The Oldham Quiet Ones was formed over 20 years ago by a Speech and Language Therapist from North Manchester General Hospital, Janice Lang.
