Volunteers keeping Uppermill clean and tidy

UCAN and Oldham Council worked alongside one another as part of the 'Don't Trash Oldham' campaign
The Uppermill Community Action Network (UCAN) volunteers have spent this last month working in partnership with a range of agencies and people who are so committed to helping keep the village clean and tidy and protecting the local wildlife.
Early on in the month UCAN and Oldham Council worked alongside one another as part of the 'Don't Trash Oldham' campaign, which sees council staff out and about across the borough, including Saddleworth, conducting additional cleaning up of litter and fly-tipping.
A UCAN spokesperson said: "We all agreed that the litter pick is a great way to show that we all care about our local environment and also reflects the regular feedback to us from visitors, residents and businesses that seeing the village litter free is really appreciated."
The second half of this month’s activities was UCAN working in partnership with the volunteers from Greenfield Street Scene on a combined 'Balsam Bash'.
Himalayan Balsam, which is recognisable by its distinctive pink flowers, can grow up to three metres (10 feet) in height, each plant can produce up to 800 seeds, spreads quickly and easily shade out or displaces other native species.
The final, most enjoyable, activity of the day was the collective gathering at the end of the various sessions to just sit together, enjoy the glorious village views and the sunshine and reflect on the day’s work over a cup of tea or coffee and consume some delightful biscuits.
UCAN are always pleased to welcome new volunteers.
