An overturned vehicle on the M60 near Oldham resulted in long tailbacks during the peak rush hour this morning (Tuesday, April 5) with drivers being forced to wait as long as 45 minutes to get through the jam.

It’s thought a van was involved in the incident, which happened on the clockwise side of the motorway at junction 23 for Ashton.

Shortly after the crash happened, traffic cameras covering the M60 showed long tailbacks on the clockwise side, with the queue quickly building up to around seven miles.

It was just after 7.30am when reports first came in of the incident with Highways National taking to social media to advise drivers to avoid the area or approach with care.

“Lanes 2 and 3 (of 3) are closed on the M60 clockwise within junction 23 in Greater Manchester due to an overturned vehicle.” The service wrote on Twitter.

“All emergency services and traffic officers are working at the scene. Please approach with care and allow extra time for your journey as delays are building.”

Around half an hour later, Highways National reported that all lanes on the M60 near Ashton had reopened but that traffic was queueing back more than seven miles with motorists being advised it would take them around 30 minutes to get through the scene.

North West Motorway Police, also attended the scene and reported that nobody involved had been injured during the incident.
