The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Jenny Harrison, has met with young people in Oldham who are keen to supplement their education.
The Mayor was a special guest at the free assessment day for 'Connexus Tuition' which covers Royton, Chadderton, Shaw and Rochdale.
The business is owned and operated by 45-year-old Barry Sherry, a former maths teacher who lives in Royton.
The open day took place at High Crompton Conservative Club where students were eager to learn more about the service.
Mr Sherry says Cllr Harrison was particularly interested in the business as an ex-teacher.
"The Mayor was very keen to show her support of the business.
"She listened intently to the business mind behind Conexus, which is designed to raise not just educational outcomes for students but also increase aspirations of young people in the borough."
The business offers a flexible approach to tuition says Mr Sherry: "Our core offer is English, maths and Science secondary tuition as this is where our main experience and expertise lies but we cater for all educational needs if there is a demand."
"For example, we tutor primary age children in the lead up to SATS exams, and adults who are either taking their GCSEs in later life or they are studying towards a GCSE equivalent Functional Skills qualification."
Research carried out for Conexus suggests many students missed 'face to face' tuition, particularly during lockdown, and that small tuition groups were particularly successful in promoting learning.
Each session takes place at local venues which have been fully risk-assessed with easy accessibility. Each tutor is also a fully qualified and experienced teacher in their subject area.
