Lowest and highest petrol prices in Oldham

Date published: 26 October 2021

Petrol prices have hit an all-time high, with 142.94 now the average price per litre.

The price of unleaded has risen from 114.5p a year ago, adding £15 to the cost of filling up a 55-litre family car.

In an unscientific test, we've checked the prices from a number of forecourts across Oldham to find the cheapest, and most expensive petrol prices in the borough.

We found the most expensive petrol at Esso in Hollinwood, operated by Euro Garages.  The price at lunchtime today for unleaded was 144.9p, meaning the cost to fill up an average family car would be £79.70.

The Texaco garage on Manchester Road was displaying 141.9p, one of the lowest prices in the area, and the BP station on Featherstall Road South showed a price of 142.9.  The same station was charging 133.9 just 8 weeks ago.

According to our research, the cheapest petrol could be found at the Tesco service stations, with a price of 141.9p, meaning a full tank would cost £78.01.

The main reason for the petrol price rise is the jump in crude prices worldwide.  In January the price was just over $50 a barrel and in October it pushed over $86.

On top of the crude prices, in the UK we pay various taxes and levies on our fuel.  Duty currently sits at 57.95p a litre. On top of that, VAT is then applied at on top at 20%.

Removing the taxes would reduce the price of a litre to 60p.
