Zach is on the right track for go-kart success

Date published: 25 October 2021

An 11-year-old go-kart enthusiast from Shaw is bringing home the trophies as he competes in races across the UK.

Zach Turner, a year 7 student at Royton and Crompton School, is currently taking part in the largest national championship in outdoor karting, the Cadet Kart Championship, which involves attending races across the UK.

Earlier this month, Zach picked up his first race win at Llandow, in South Wales to the delight of his proud mum Carly.

“Zach is absolutely thrilled.  His confidence has grown massively over the last year.   He now spends time perfecting his kart in the garage at home or sat watching YouTube clips to improve his driving skills. He even has a fan page on Facebook where his followers get to see his progress and some 360° camera action from his go-pro that we have attached to his kart.”

Zach’s interest in karting began when his parents bought him a birthday treat at Team Karting in Rochdale. After falling in love with the sport, Zach was keen to improve his performance indoors before venturing to the outdoor tracks.

His parents bought his first kart last year and is already looking forward to moving up into the 11–15-year-old class next season with karts that will exceed 70mph.  But Zach’s ambition lies even further.

“After that he wants to go all the way in karting, and then transition to cars and hopefully make a career out of motorsports.

Now, Carly is keen to find more local sponsors to help fund Zach’s career

“Zach’s success does come at a cost, a typical weekend costs around £300 for entry fees, then tyres and maintenance are on top - it’s a frightening amount per year! Costs will only increase as he moves up the classes.  We are currently converting a van into a camper to cut down on hotel costs.”

Zach also competes in Monthly club championships at Hooton Park Indikart series near Ellesmere Port and is set to visit the Clay Pigeon Circuit in Dorchester later this month.
