A hero teacher from Oldham, Steve Hill MBE, has been given a rapturous welcome home, after completing the Great Norse Run in Iceland.

The 49 year old Deputy Head, at St. Jospeh's RC Primary School in Shaw, is now well known for completing tough challenges and for his latest one ran 9 marathons in 9 days.

He told us: “It feels absolutely amazing to have completed The Great Norse Run.

"I had to complete 9 marathons in 9 days across the length of Iceland.

"Sleeping in a tent each night has been an extremely tough challenge but it’s been a truly epic adventure, running past volcanos, glaciers and through lava fields. Iceland is a beautiful country.

"It was amazing to get the opportunity to see whales up close in the ocean. I saw a Humpback Whale and a Minke Whale and the most spectacular thing I saw was the Volcano which is currently erupting"

He set off with 20 other runners on Friday August 29th. The distance he covered was approximately 230 miles or 370 kilometres. He finished the challenge and was presented with a medal on reaching Vik on the south coast on Sunday.

Mr Hill has received hundreds of messages of support along the way.

"I’ve been really encouraged over the past 9 days and messages have meant so much to me and helped spur me on.

"I also had letters and messages from my pupils at school to open throughout the challenge which has been a great source of motivation.”
