Action Together celebrates #MonthofCommunity

Date published: 27 May 2021

Local charity Action Together is taking part in #MonthofCommunity in June to celebrate and thank everyone who has volunteered to strengthen Oldham, Rochdale, and Tameside throughout the pandemic.

Action Together will kick off the #MonthofCommunity by taking part in the national campaign #VolunteersWeek and launching the Volunteer Celebration Fund.

The local charity has coordinated a range of volunteer roles, including emergency response volunteers in Oldham, doorstep volunteers in Rochdale, Miles of Smiles drivers in Tameside and many more who have gone above and beyond to support Action Together to strengthen our local communities during the pandemic.

Liz Windsor-Welsh, Action Together Chief Executive, said: “We are extremely proud of our volunteers, from the new people helping at vaccination centres to our trustees who have volunteered for many years.

"Their passion and drive to help others is inspiring and vital to our communities and we have seen this even more so during the pandemic.

“Action Together has produced a badge of unity and hope to thank our volunteers for all of the support they provide.

"We’re launching the Volunteer Celebration Fund to encourage you to recognise your volunteers, from those who have given small acts of kindness during the pandemic through to delivering support to those most in need.

"Volunteers’ Week provides a time to say thanks.

“Our volunteers and those volunteering in organisations across Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside truly make a difference to local lives.”

Action Together is working with local artists in Oldham and Rochdale to collect and share experiences of everyday kindness during the pandemic to celebrate the amazing contribution of our communities.

The Council in Tameside will also be working closely with Action Together on their public celebration of volunteers and communities.

In Oldham, Action Together is working with Rebecca and Michael from May Wild Studios.

They live and work in Oldham and are inspired by handcraft, nature, storytelling, community and collaboration.

In Rochdale, the charity is working with Rahela Khan and Bushra Sultana who are both community art practitioners in the town.

Bushra and Rahela are inspired by Rochdale’s landscape, community groups and share a passion for working with local people to create their work.

The artists have been listening to people across our boroughs, collecting stories, photos, drawings and memories which bring to life radical everyday kindness.

They are producing a public artwork in each town centre so the celebration can be there for everyone to see.

The artworks will be completed at the end of #MonthofCommunity.

Each week of #MonthofCommunity (June 1-30) will focus on a different element of volunteering:

Week 1 (June 1 – 7): Volunteers’ Week

Week 2 (June 8 – 14): Recruiting volunteers

Week 3 (June 15 – 21): Reconnect with volunteers

Week 4 (June 22 – 30): Reflection on volunteering

The charity’s volunteering team has a wealth of experience that gives groups and residents the knowledge and skills to strengthen our local communities.

If you want to find out what’s available in your neighbourhood, and the different ways you can give your time, whether you want to support a local group or you have your own ideas, Action Together is here to help.
