Oldham West and Royton MP and Shadow Transport Secretary Jim McMahon has welcomed Transport for Greater Manchester’s decision to recommend that the Mayor and Leaders in Greater Manchester press ahead and adopt a franchised bus system in Greater Manchester.
Mr McMahon said: “I’m really pleased that TfGM have made this recommendation on the back of two public consultations now, after 40 years of failed experiments with bus deregulation in Greater Manchester it’s time we create a bus system that works for all of us in our city-region.
“Franchising will help us build a bus network that benefits those who use it rather than solely those who own it with cheaper tickets, daily caps, smarter timetables and better value for money for the taxpayer and bus users.
“It’s issues with bus services in the constituency that fill my postbag more than any other transport issue, so I know how important getting a bus system the works for the people of Chadderton, Oldham and Royton, where we’ve seen bus services take a massive hit over the last ten years.”
