It's official: freezing weather and wintry showers until the end of the year

Date published: 28 December 2020

The deluge of rain and wintry showers seen across Oldham over the Christmas period will finally take a break today (28 December).

The borough has been battered by strong winds and rain over the weekend, and there may still be some wintery showers to start with on Monday.  However, it will remain dry for the most part.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice remains in place for most of northern England, including Oldham.  A yellow weather warning means:

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

Temperatures will remain very cold for the rest of the year, with a likelyhood of wintry showers and freezing fog later this week.

The chilly temperatures follow several days of extreme weather over the Christmas period, which saw severe flooding in parts of southern England.  Storm Bella arrived on Boxing Day, with winds of more than 100mph reported.

The top wind speed was recorded at the Needles on the Isle of Wight, where it reached 106mph overnight on Saturday.
