The Mayor of Oldham’s final donation of the year - £300 - has gone to a 'fab' organisation — PHAB a self-funding not-for-profit community charity group run by volunteers.
Formed in 2000, the organisation was opened and run by the present chair Jack Edwards who started the group because of his daughter Donna has a severe disability and there was nowhere for her to go.
The group’s motto is: “Making More Of A Life Together” and enables young adults with physical and learning disabilities and difficulties and able bodied to enjoy social interaction in a safe community environment.
The club is affiliated to a national organisation based in London, Phab England, which was formed in the early 1950s.
Based at the Crossley Centre in Chadderton and open on a Monday evening, the group work with people from 18 and upwards
Some members have been attending since their teenage years and still attend weekly group sessions. Members are also involved in the planning and implementing personal choice projects.
And they take a yearly holiday to a venue chosen by members which aids giving them life skills as they plan and implement the activities meals and adventures. The four-day holiday allows parents and carers to enjoy a break.
Unfortunately, the pandemic has meant they had to close their weekly group but they have been doing fundraising.on their Raffle Facebook page.
