Oldham's pet-loving Mayor has made a £500 donation to the town’s unsung cat rescue centre to help with vets fees for sick animals.

And councillor Ginny Alexander pleaded with owners to have cats neutered or spayed to help stop them wandering, fighting and unwanted kittens being abandoned.

Oldham Cats has been rescuing cats in the town since 1996 before moving to Middleton in 1998.

They now have an admissions unit where cats have to have a seven-day holding period.

No cat or kittens are allowed to proceed to any rehome unit until they have been fully monitored.

Said Mayor cllr Alexander: ”Oldham Cats do great work and are asking for donations so they can buy cat houses for  stray cats for the winter.

"They also sell beautiful fleeces which can be ordered through their organisation.

"I bought one and love it.”

To make a donation or buy a fleece top, contact Ellen Haigh on 077469 52344 or visit Facebook - Oldham Cats fund-raising page.

All monies go to help cats at the rescue centre.

The mayor added: “Thanks to all at Oldham Cats Rescue - such a dedicated team who work seven days a week, 365 days a year ensuring cats and kittens are receiving the best possible attention.

"The centre relies solely on donations and fundraising and they have no shop to support their marvellous efforts.”
