The new flag flying at Saddleworth Parish Church to mark it’s reopening on Sunday has special significance to the community’s heroes of the hills.
Because the flag was donated by Dave Allport a senior member of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team and his wife Dorene a member of the church choir.
The Church has been raising much needed funds to refurbish it’s magnificent East window and stonework surrounds and are pressing to continue raising further funds to refurbish the roof.
A OMRT spokesperson said: “Our Team has had a very long and proud connection with Saddleworth Church and it was only 14 months ago a small group of Team members went and fitted the last flag.
“However the weather in Saddleworth is rather unforgiving, and the flag had seen better days. The new flag will hopefully last a good while longer.
"So last weekend another small group of Team members went back up the church tower and exchanged the old flag for the new one.
"It was a quick job, but was worth while and one of the iconic buildings in Saddleworth is flying high again.”
