Work has started on transforming a former abattoir into a £5.5million housing development in Royton.
Great Places have worked in partnership with Grasscroft Property and Wiggett Construction, to enable delivery of 39 new homes on Edge Lane.
The site has been derelict since 2014 when it was last used as the Harvey Ashworth abattoir.
The development consists of eight two-bed, 17 three-bed and two four bed houses as well as six one-bed and six two-bed apartments, all for affordable rent.
The new homes are expected to be completed in the spring of 2022.
Helen Spencer, Great Places’ Director of Development, said: “As an organisation, we are committed to delivering homes in sustainable locations, tackling the housing crisis and transforming vacant sites like this which help address a real need for housing in the area.
“Great Places has a very ambitious development programme across the North West and is focused on quality and affordable housing.
“These new properties will provide 39 families with a fantastic new home and we look forward to welcoming new customers to Great Places at this site.”
Mark Sexton, Development Director at Wiggett Construction Ltd, said: “We are delighted to be working with Great Places in our home town, transforming a brownfield site into much-needed affordable housing.
"The scheme will help provide work for our local subcontractor and material suppliers and hopefully generate new job opportunities in these difficult times.”
