Easing of lockdown across the UK is postponed for two weeks

Prime Minister Boris Johnson says casinos and bowling alleys will remain shut and further easing of lockdown restrictions are being postponed for two weeks.

Wedding receptions of up to 30 people were also meant to be allowed from tomorrow (August 1) but that has also been halted as well as indoor performances, pilots of large gatherings in sports venues and conference centres. 

It's after the Office for National Statistics estimates there are now around 4,900 new infections every day - up from 3,000 daily cases two weeks ago.

Mr Johnson said: "You will remember at every point I have said our plan to reopen society and the economy is conditional, that it relies on continued progress against the virus and we would not hesitate to put the brakes on if required.

"With those numbers creeping up our assessment is that we should now squeeze that brake pedal to keep the virus under control." 

We'll also have to start wearing face coverings in more places.

The rules are being extended for people going to galleries, cinemas and places of worship.

They are already required in shops and on public transport. 

This will become enforceable in law from next Saturday (August 8).

The change in direction from the Government comes after Greater Manchester, and parts of East Lancashire and West Yorkshire have been banned from visiting friends and family from different households in indoor spaces and private gardens.

People are still being encouraged to return to the workplace in August, though.

Mr Johnson added: "We know that employers have gone to huge lengths to reopen workplaces so that guidance remains unchanged."
