Here's your last chance to see your name - in heights!

Chadderton charity mountaineer Akke Rahman has revealed one of his peak targets is to plant a flag on the summit of Kilimanjaro - emblazoned with the word, 'Oldham'.

The 37-year-old adventurer is aiming to conquer the Tanzanian giant as well as Mont Blanc from July 7, and is seeking sponsorship for his jacket, gloves and the banner that will pinpoint his achievement.

But unlike other mountaineers who are quite content to seek funding from any source, Akke wants an Oldham business at the pinnacle, alongside the national flags of Bangladesh and Great Britain.

“I am immensely proud to be a British-Bengali but this pales into insignificance next to my feelings about Oldham, my home,” admitted Akke.

“I seem to have gained some notoriety for being the Bengali Mountaineer, so this is a glorious opportunity to put our town on the world stage.”

Akke’s exploits have already featured on TV screens across America, Asia, and Australia.

His trip is even being catalogued by Bengali TV. But the beneficiaries of his latest trek are much closer to home.

The Westwood Academy is an independent school steeped in decent values and high standards of education.

And dad-of-three Akke is determined to make sure children in his borough get the very best start to life.

“Throughout my training regime and quest, I want to inspire other people in Oldham to exercise and take better care of themselves,2 added Akke.

“I also want to encourage businesses, particularly from the South Asian community, to support local good causes.

"Charitable work for people in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh is noble and worthwhile, but our community here need support, too.

"These have been difficult times for many of us. Now we must come together and encourage each other, under a flag that says, 'Oldham'."

Akke is aiming to raise at £10,000 to help maintain and expand Westwood’s facilities.
