Night Time chief urges calm ahead of pubs re-opening on Saturday

Date published: 02 July 2020

Sacha Lord, the Night Time Economy Adviser for Greater Manchester, has urged calm from the public at large as the hospitality sector prepares to reopen on Saturday (July 4).

Yesterday, the Chronicle reported how Greater Manchester Police is planning for a ‘significant’ operation across the region’s cities and towns to ensure a smooth reopening of pubs this weekend.

Mr Lord has now urged hospitality sector customers not to disregard the safety aspect as they make their own preparations.

Mr Lord said: "On July 4, many of our pubs, bars and restaurants will open their doors again.

"They have been through the very worst over the past three months, but have worked hard to ensure customers feel safe on their return and will be nervous but excited to welcome you back.

"For those heading out, I urge you to help the operators by checking your trip and reserving tables in advance.

"Not everywhere will be open and many operators have chosen to wait until mid week or later in the summer to reopen in order to install extra measures to keep you safe.

"Please also think about staying local and visiting the independent pubs, bars and restaurants.

"They are the ones who have been hit the hardest throughout the crisis and will continue to struggle over the next few months while they rebuild.

"If you are venturing out further, Greater Manchester's Metrolink will be running until 23:00 on Saturday and 22:00 on Sunday, with extra services put on to cope with an expected increase in demand.

"Please remember to take adequate face coverings with you on your night out to be able to board Metrolink and to hail Ubers and taxis so you can get home safely.

"The past three months have shown Greater Manchester's unity and strength in getting through this crisis together.

"I hope we can repeat this proudly over the weekend and I encourage everyone going out to enjoy themselves, but please, keep yourself and each other safe."
