Villagers near an iconic village church have been alerted after callous thieves have attempted to steal coping stones from the churchyard.
Leaders at Holy Trinity Church, Dobcross, have urged villagers to report anything suspicious to police after several coping stones were dislodged.
The stones are placed in the tops of church walls on the north side of the ancient building at Woods Lane near the remembrance table.
In a note to villagers, a church spokesperson said: “Please note the church is not having any work done at this time.
"If you are passing and see anything suspicious, please call the police immediately.
“Many thanks to the villagers who were walking past and brought this to our attention.
"As always, but especially at times like these, our community makes us stronger. Stay safe.”
Earlier this year, locals were furious over the theft of paving stones near a seat at a popular resting place in front of a bench opposite the Limekiln Café at Dobcross.
They feared a return of thieves who stole paving stones at two churches last year.
Although there was no suggestion there was a link, church leaders expressed “anger and dismay” after the thefts of paving stones from the hallowed ground at Saddleworth Parish Church, Uppermill, and Kilngreen, Diggle.
