Royton-born Wendy Muldowney
Royton mother of two Wendy Muldowney, has lived in Tenerife more than 20 years.
Here, talking to the Oldham Chronicle, she shows the contrasts between the lockdown in the UK and the tough stance taken in the Canary island.
She says: “Until Monday May 4 we still have to remain in our homes, with only the children under 14 being allowed out for on hour to get fresh air or accompany their parent to the supermarket or chemist.
“As from the 4th May, small shops can open - hairdressers - but only under appointment basis and only then only 30% of the normal amount of people allowed inside the business premises, always respecting social distancing and use of gloves and masks recommended.
“We will also be able to start to go out for a walk/exercise with people in the family/residential unit.
“Bars/restaurants can open for collection of food and if they have a terrace, can also allow 30% usage respecting social distancing and recommendations of masks and gloves.
“We have been told schools will reopen in September so that’s a long time for the children to be off school. Classes are still being done over the internet on a daily basis with the teachers contacting the children via internet platforms.
“Living in a touristic area, we have absolutely no idea how and when we will start receiving either local or international tourism,” she explained.
“We are half way through week 7 of being in lockdown and although here in the county of Santiago del Teide we have only had 10 cases.
“Two unfortunately passed away and three are now better but we have five people still battling this virus. It is still frightening thinking that people from outside could well be soon coming to our beautiful villages and bringing the virus with them.
“We just all have to be very careful, keep washing our hands, stay safe, use protection and look after one another.”
And she added: “Make sure your family and neighbours and people who are alone are ok.
"I know there are various public media platforms that a lot of people are using to stay in contact with the outside world , so stay safe everyone and hopefully see you all soon on the other side.”
