Posties make Special Delivery in Oldham

Date published: 28 April 2020

Superheroes, Footballers and Children’s TV stars were spotted last week on the streets of Oldham delivering the mail.

Spiderman, Bananaman and Bungle the Bear from 70s TV show Rainbow were among characters on delivery rounds working out of Royal Mail’s Oldham delivery office.

But never fear - residents’ usual posties hadn’t been replaced - staff at the Hamilton Street office came to work in fancy dress last Friday to raise money and collect food for Oldham Foodbank.

Designated as key workers, Royal Mail staff are still working and so can’t spare huge amounts of time to volunteer with the coronavirus relief effort, but they were still determined to do their bit.

In total staff raised £282.00 and collected a trolley full of long-life food that could be distributed to people in need.

Delivery Office Manager Alan Livingstone said: “The staff are always up for supporting a good cause and as well as raising cash and collecting food they put smiles on the faces of local children who saw their post being delivered by a super hero or cartoon character.”

The money will go towards buying essential goods for some of the most vulnerable people who contact Oldham Council’s helpline for assistance during the crisis. The food will be distributed to people who are unable to shop due to self-isolation.
