NHS is "open for business"

Oldhamers are being encouraged to visit their GP if they have a non-Covid 19 health issue.

Oldham’s chief clinical officer Dr John Patterson says despite the Coronavirus crisis, the NHS is still functioning well.  "The hospital is running clinics as normal - though some consultations are by video conference call; and GPs surgeries are also using technology to treat patients during the crisis.

With the help of the people of Oldham, we've managed to flatten the curve with Coronavirus, but we don't want to discourage anyone from coming forward with other health issues".

With the adherence to social distancing making a difference to the transmission of the virus, staff absences in the health sector in Oldham is less than 20%.  This means the NHS is able to cope with routine or emergency health concerns during the crisis.

Routine and non-Covid19 services are still well resourced, despite increased pressure on the NHS and slow delivery of PPE in places across the UK.

Dr Patterson says people shouldn't be reticent about visiting their GP or hospital:  "Health premises are probably the cleanest and safest environment right now.  Cleaners have been specially trained, and the staff are ensuring social distancing is observed.

"Please don't leave conditions untreated.  If you have concerns about a persistent cough, a back pain, or chest pains for example, then please visit your GP.

"The NHS is open for business".
