Local MP signs up to Action Together and joins the frontline

Angela Rayner, MP for Ashton-Under-Lyne and recently elected Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, has volunteered to join the frontline with Action Together during the COVID-19 crisis.

She revealed it in a letter sent out to the care homes in her constituency and added that she "can't wait to get started".

The letter also expresses her thanks and admiration for the hard work of the care givers during this time.

Mrs Rayner, whose constituency also includes Failsworth, said: "Each and every one of you is essential – not just in looking after our ill and our elderly, but in supporting and maintaining the NHS.

"Your magnificent efforts are helping to free up essential critical care capacity in our hospitals.

"I was a care worker before I got into politics so I am aware of the pressures you are facing and these will have increased significantly over the last few months.

"I have signed up with Action Together to return to the frontline and I can’t wait to get started.

"You have my full admiration and support and I will continue to press the Government to get you the PPE you need to do your job safely.

"Please let me know if you are running low on PPE and I will try to procure some for you.

"Anyone discharged from hospital into a care setting must also be tested so that they can be looked after appropriately.

"My greatest hope is that when this pandemic has passed, society will recognise the vital role that key workers like you and your team play and show their appreciation in more tangible ways."

Mrs Rayner, who has now shaken off her own bout of coronavirus, sent out a letter to schools in Ashton to thank them as well and assure them that she is "pushing the Government to release details of their plans for exiting lockdown so that we can all make the necessary preparations – but only when it is safe to do so."
