Oldham’s mayor has broken the Government coronavirus lockdown - to play the good fairy to deserving causes.
Cllr Ginny Alexander made the move after consulting with her husband and condort Adrian and her team in the mayor's office.
She said: “Over the past few weeks I have felt an unspeakable pain for my community and country.
"I have found myself sitting for hours in isolation thinking about what I can do to help during these troubling times.
“I have decided that these extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.
"That is why I will be breaking the norm of waiting until the official end of my Mayoral year to distribute charity funds.
“In the next few weeks I will be donating large amounts of money from my Mayoral Appeal Fund to local organisations and charities that need it most during this really harsh time we are all facing.
“I've donated £1,000 to Pennine Pen Animal Rescue to enable them to continue to serve the animals within their facilities.
"I have also donated this excellent hamper so that they can raise further funds when this is all over.
“I really hope this can tide this great organisation over until they are able to receive more funds and support from the public through events and other fundraising.”
Cllr Alexander added: “Please, if you are in a position to do so, continue to support this group through food and monetary donations toward veterany fees and medication.
“My thanks goes out to each and every person who has donated anything to my Mayoral Appeal Fund - you have made such a difference.
“Please continue to obey the government’s guidelines of staying home, protecting the NHS, and saving lives.”
