The search is on for Oldham’s longest lasting marriage

Date published: 11 September 2017

The Queen and Prince Philip celebrate their seventieth wedding anniversary in November, and to mark the occasion, the search is on for Oldham’s most enduring married couple.

The Mayor of Oldham wants to find and meet any married couple from Oldham whose marriage has lasted longer – or almost as long as – the royal couple.

If you know a couple who are approaching their seventieth year of marriage, get in touch and the pair will be honoured with a visit from the Mayor and a special memento to mark their long lasting love.

Mayor of Oldham, Shadab Qumer, explained: “For any couple to reach their seventieth wedding anniversary is an incredible achievement.

“So, inspired by The Queen and Prince Philip, we thought it would be a very nice touch to try and find Oldham’s most enduring marriage and pay them a special visit.

“If you know a couple who have been married for 70 years, or approaching 70 years, I’d love to hear about it.”

The Queen and Prince Philip celebrate 70 years, known as the Platinum anniversary or Platinum Jubilee, on 20 November.

Mayor Qumer, has been married to the Mayoress, Sobia, for 17 years.

To nominate a long lasting Oldham couple, contact the Mayor by 31 October:
