Deadly Merv can't stop scoring goals!

HE might be approaching the ripe 'old' age of 40, but Mervyn Davies still knows where the onion bag is.
A veteran of the Oldham Sunday League scene, Mervyn, from Lees, went goal mad last weekend, scoring ELEVEN times for Oddies 14 in a 20-0 drubbing of new team Old Bank in a Division One fixture.
Mervyn's feat equalled a 23-year-old scoring record for the league, set on February 14, 1993, when former Chadderton manager and local football legend Paul Buckley bagged 11 as his Lees and Hey team crushed Abbey Lee 21-3.
INTERVAL
Ironically, Mervyn has played alongside Buckley in the past, during their days together at Legends and the Bulls Head.
"It was the first time I'd turned out for Oddies this season, so it wasn't a bad way to get off the mark," said Mervyn, who scored five goals in the first half and six in the second. It was 10-0 to Oddies at the interval.
"The opposition were struggling to be honest, but I just seemed to be in the right place at the right time.
"They had a full team out, but they just couldn't cope with us."
Despite his goal-scoring heroics - he scored 20 times in half-a-dozen games for Oddies last season - Mervyn has little experience of football at a higher level than the Sunday league.
He played a number of games for Oldham Town in the North-West Counties League around a decade ago.
Mervyn added: "I just enjoy getting out for a game. I don't take my football seriously at all really. It's just about getting out there with my mates on a Sunday."
Mervyn didn't realise he was homing in on an outright record on Sunday, so after 70 minutes and running out of steam he was replaced by Oddies manager Dave Pullen.
However, it soon became apparent that a league record was in the offing, so Mervyn went back on.
He said: "It's roll-on, roll-off subs these days so I went back on for the last 10 minutes.
"It was unbelievable, I was really going for it, but I hit the crossbar and had two goals ruled out. I did everything but score. Still, I can't complain too much about scoring 11 goals in a game."
