Clash of the decades

CROWDS flocked to Peach Road to watch two rugby league greats collide in a special charity game.

Barrie McDermott's team of the '80s and the recently retired Kevin Sinfield's class of the '90s returned to their old stomping ground of Waterhead ARFLC to raise money for the Steve Prescott Foundation.

Two of the sport's stand-out names from the past, Lee Briers and Iestyn Harris, also donned the home club's colours for the worthy cause, along with the likes of Ian Sinfield, Gareth Barber, Darren Nixon, Paul Geener, Keith Brennan and Carl Sneyd.

Also present in the team line ups were Linzi Prescott, widow of Steve, and Lizzie Jones, widow of Danny, who suffered a heart attack and later died while playing for Keighley Cougars in 2015.

McDermott is climbing to Everest base camp in October and the proceeds from the charity match will go towards the £10,000 he is hoping to raise for the foundation.

It was set up in 2007 when former St Helens, Hull FC and Wakefield Trinity full-back Prescott, a former team-mate of McDermott's, was diagnosed with a rare form of stomach cancer. He died three years ago at the age of 39.

Admission was free, but spectators were asked to make a donation on the day or through www.justgiving.com/Barrie-McDermott
