Diggle 0, Newsome 3
DIGGLE slipped to second-from-bottom in Division One of the Huddersfield and District League following a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Newsome at Churchill fields, leaving manager Richard Devy a frustrated man.
Devy said: "We had a lot of players missing due to circumstances like the cricket season still going on, holidays, people at work and of course the Manchester derby.
"It all has a knock-on effect and it can be very frustrating. We didn't even have a recognised striker on the pitch.
"Even so we played pretty well and we were hit by counter-attacks for each of the Newsome goals.
PRESSURE
"We started quite brightly with a succession of corners and we put Newsome under a lot of pressure in the early stages."
Diggle were seeking their first league win of the season and up against a Newsome side with extremely contrasting results in their opening games.
On the opening day of the season Newsome were hammered 9-1 at home by Heywood Irish Centre, but four days later emerged 10-0 winners against Hepworth United.
Devy added: "Results have shown what a competitive league this is a and I am sure we can get a win under our belts soon."
James Osbourne had Diggle's best chance in the tenth minute but his header from 12 yards out just cleared the angle of crossbar and post.
Newsome edged ahead in the 12th minute before scoring two further goals in the dying minutes of the match.
DIGGLE: Bongeyr, Broadbent, Forshaw, Cheetham, Thomas, Chew, Owens, Kershaw, Osbourne, Gregory, Brown. Sub: Devy.
STAR MAN: Gareth Chew (Diggle) - A tireless performance.
