Wood’s ‘nightmare’

PROMOTER Steve Wood has spoken of his dismay after he was forced to postpone the ‘Blaze of Glory’ professional boxing show, which had been scheduled for this Saturday at the new Oldham Sports Centre.

Too many fighters withdrawing through injury was the main reason cited by the VIP Boxing chief.

Once Delph-based Andy Kremner and Warrington’s Adam McKay were forced off the bill on Monday, Wood was forced to postpone the show until Saturday, July 2.

Wood said: “Everything that could go wrong on this show, has gone wrong.

“In total six fighters have had to pull out and we couldn’t go on.

“We started off with a big number, realising that one or two might pull out, but with six going it left us with only six fights.

“To be honest I don’t mind losing a few thousand quid on a show, but the way it was going it was looking like seven or eight thousand we’d have lost.

“It’s a lovely big venue, and with losing so many fighters the crowd would have looked sparse.

“We want to make sure it’ll be packed out, so the venue people were happy for us to change the date.

“It’s been a nightmare.”

VIP and Black Flash Promotions will now stage a joint ‘Blaze of Glory’ show at the same venue on July 2. Manchester’s Zelfa Barrett will appear.

Jon Kays, who was set to feature in Oldham on Saturday, will now fight at the Wigan Robin Park Arena on Saturday week, May 28.
