FROM golf society member at a local pub to captain of Oldham Golf Club.
That’s the journey which 52-year-old Mike Ganley has completed – along with a group of golfing buddies.
Affectionately known as “Stan” to his friends, the Virgin Media access technician began playing golf on municipal courses, particularly in the Rochdale area.
“We had our own society at the Weaver’s Arms and we used to go around playing the municipals like Marland and occasionally Castle Hawk in Rochdale, and some private courses,” said Stan.
“Then we decided it would be cheaper to join a club so we chose Oldham. There are about six of us left from the golf society days and we still play together.”
Stan, who has two daughters and a son, was born and bred in Oldham and currently lives in Moorside.
ACHIEVEMENT
He currently plays off nine, having been down to seven at one stage.
He has won five majors at Oldham, but he classes his finest achievement as victory in the club championship.
“I only entered to try to win the nett prize, but I had two great rounds of 72 and 73 to win the gross,” said Stan.
