Angling: CHRIS Lett is on a roll at the moment, winning yet another Todmorden AS trophy match on Croft.
Using the pole and tip, he tempted 34lb 4oz of carp - too good for runner-up Rob McKendry, who returned 27lb 5oz of carp.
BOB Hunt was the winner of the Field Farm Fishery open with 49lb 1oz of carp on the tip and pole.
Second-best Ken Power (Tri-Cast Highfield) was second with nine carp weighing in at 29lb 7oz. He opted for the method feeder and 14-metre pole and sweetcorn. combination.
MY first match over the Bank Holiday weekend, the Wigan AA open, took place on the organiser’s length of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Cowling. I was expecting a hard match, but it was much worse than I feared with half of the 30-strong field dry-netting. I had one bite and one little skimmer, while an electrical storm had those struggling packing up early.
Shaun Paddon, of Tri-Cast Highfield, claimed his second victory in last two weeks with a 4lb 15oz net.
He boasted a 2lb 8oz bream first put-in on bread punch, followed by a couple of skimmers and a solitary roach. Situated close by, Anthony Marsden was the runner-up with a few skimmers also falling to bread and weighing in at 2lb 13oz.
THE Toms Pond open match on Easter Monday was well-attended, with 30 anglers turning up. A 47lb net won the day, from a second-best 37lb. Trout was mostly caught on various baits, such as worm, pellet and maggot.
I fished a tight match, feeding red maggots in six parts of my swim and caster at two different areas.
I managed 25 trout and a dozen or so ide that together totalled 30lb 7oz for fifth place on the day and a £30 section win. Happy days!
Trout are added to this water at the start of winter, ensuring everyone gets plenty of bites. They are then removed during the first week of April and put in a stock pond, fed by a stream. They return for the winter. This is a great idea and one or two waters in Yorkshire have done a similar thing in the past. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it but, to be honest, it’s guaranteed bites and your elastic comes flying out with every fish .I’ll be back next year, that’s for sure.
DAVE Chadwick, of Halifax Matrix, topped a rock-hard Northern AA open match on the High Lane length of the Macclesfield Canal. He had just 1lb 2oz of small roach and perch on bread punch and chopped worm.
ROCHDALE angler Mark Webb (Saints) took first place in the Moss Farm Fishery open.
Chopped worm and caster accounted for 16lb of roach and carp, which beat Liverpool rod Frank Holding, who used identical tactics for 13lb.
