Spot-kick poser for officials

THE Oldham Sunday League might re-introduce penalty shoot-outs to determine the outcome of outstanding knock-out matches in the run-up to the respective finals.

The foul weather of the last few months has brought about a high number of postponements for almost all of our local sides, with Oldham Sunday League teams particularly badly hit.

As well as frustration for players and officials, this situation presents a headache for the league’s fixtures secretary Keith Dennis.

Dennis said: “It’s certainly going to be hectic, no doubt about it. We’ve still got the last-eight stages of the Challenge Cup and President’s Trophy to sort out and we also have two teams — Top House and Crown FC — involved in the Manchester County FA Sunday Cup.

“There are lots of league fixtures still outstanding and there are going to be lots of midweek matches when the nights get lighter.”

THE Oldham Sunday League is conducting a poll to gauge interest and reaction to its representative team, writes JOHN GILDER.

The committee has feedback from its own clubs, but would like to know the views of current players, ex-players or followers of amateur football to see if there is still interest in the league competing against other leagues in the North-West.

At the time of going to press, the poll showed 81 per cent in favour and 19 per cent against.
