England call for Aaron

TEENAGE potting sensation Aaron Davies has continued his remarkable rise in the pool rankings by bagging a place in the England men’s senior squad.

The 18 year old, from Royton, has avoided the normal route of progressing through the under-23s, and is now looking forward to the World Pool Championships in Blackpool in June.

Because Aaron was rated in the top six in Great Manchester, he was eligible for senior England trials and took his chance. From a field of 64, he clinched one of the available half-dozen places.

The Manchester University maths student is now in a pool of 15 England players, which will be whittled down to 10 for the Worlds’ team event. But he has already booked a place in the singles.

Dad Martin said: “Aaron probably surprised himself, because not many at his age make the senior team.

“He thought he would take the opportunity and it paid off.”

MOORSIDE ace Michael Wild and Pakistan professional Hamza Akbar, who is based at the Oldham Snooker Academy, were beaten in the early stages of the Gdynia Open in Poland.
After leading 2-1, Wild eventually bowed out 4-2 against Mark King, while Akbar succumbed by the same scoreline to Mark Davis.
