LIMESIDE King George may have bowed out of the North West Sunday Champions’ Cup at the last-eight, but there is lots to look forward to in the rest of the season.

Still on the hunt for silverware on five fronts, George lost in the Champions’ Cup against a Middleton Colts outfit simply the better side on the day.

That was the case when George and Colts met earlier this season in the semi-final of the Manchester County FA Invitation Shield, when George were comfortable 4-0 winners.

No such luck in front of goal for George in this, the biggest competition for Sunday league sides across the north-west.

Jermaine Steele saw his effort shave the outside of an upright after his effort beat the Colts’

goalkeeper, while the goalie denied Liam Cashmore with a brilliant save after 70 minutes when George were already 2-0 down.

You just couldn’t fault the effort of the George players, nor that of the club’s players and officials who turned up early, eager to get the tie played on a wet Mable Road playing surface with sand levelled into the tricky centre-circle area.

Colts took the lead half way through the first half and, as George toiled to get back in the tie, added a second after 64 minutes.

George secretary Steve McKenna said: “There weren’t a lot of chances for either side, but they were the better team and deserved to win.

“Before that we were on a 13-match winning run. Maybe the momentum wasn’t with us against Colts.”

But the season is far from over for George, with domestic trophies well within reach and, of course, that prestigious MCFA Shield final on a date to be arranged.

It looks like it could be a cracking end to this current Oldham Sunday League campaign.
