Angling: CHRIS Lett was terrific in the latest Todmorden AS silvers match on Croft.
He impressed with a match-winning 15lb 8oz net of roach, skimmers and ide, which fell to pole and bronze maggot. Runner-up Pete Fitton had an almost identical catch, also on pole-fished maggot, which tipped the scales at 13lb 8oz.
Sunday sees the penultimate round of the silvers league on Townhouse, with the culmination of the competition seven days later on January 17, on Croft.
MARK Darbyshire took first place in the Twingate AC winter match on the club water. Opting for skimmers and ide on maggot at 11 metres, he attracted 12lb 6oz of f1s.
Mick Diskin was just a fish adrift in a net of f1s, ide and skimmers, which weighed in at 11lb 12oz.
In the latest Twingate AC match on the club water, Steve Baines emerged victorious with an 8lb 13oz catch. Baines collected a 7lb carp, ide and roach on maggot over groundbait at 11 metres. Shaun Finnerty, in second place, had 4lb 9oz of f1s and skimmers.
ANTHONY Marsden was the clear winner in the penultimate round of the Pennine Winter League on the Mirfield and Broad canals in and around Huddersfield.
The Wigan AS rod was situated at the red-hot walkover bridge peg in Aspley Marina, where he bagged plenty of dumpy roach and three late bream on bread punch and caster for 14lb. Second was John Sedgewick, who had 9lb 7oz of mostly roach on bread and caster.
On the team front, Tri-Cast Calder won on the day with 41 points, followed by Wigan (40pts) and Maver North-West (39 pts). With one round to go, Tri-Cast Calder lead the way on 147 pts, from Maver North-West (141pts) and Wigan (139pts).
I FISHED the New Year’s Day match on the Saltaire length of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and, although some decent weights were recorded, most anglers had to settle for tiny roach.
Winner and organiser Ricky East (Matrix Halifax) drew the hot-spot, and it was no surprise that he
dominated proceedings. He had a superb net of big roach to 12oz on caster over hemp, tight across to the far bank wall for 8lb 2oz.
Team-mate Nigel Storr was also got among the big roach as he weighed in a second-best 5lb 8oz.
THE Calder and Hebble Canal in Wakefield is not even an hour’s drive away, and is without doubt offering the best roach fishing in the North of England. In a recent open match, Dave Armitage was the winner with 22lb 9oz of roach and perch on maggot and caster, fished at six and 12 metres.
Although Mick Chapman was situated on the next peg, he was some way adrift in the second place with 12lb 6oz.
