Ian McLean: double in vain for Saddleworth ‘A’.
TABLE TENNIS: SADDLEWORTH ‘B’ claimed this season’s bragging rights in Division One of the Oldham and District Table Tennis League by completing the double over their ‘A’ team.
They won 8-2 thanks to a treble from Paul King, who maintained his challenge for the ‘most wins’ prize. King was ably assisted by Matty Evans and Nathan Buckley, who both notched doubles, while Ian McLean replied with a brace.
Elsewhere, Unison recovered from two recent 10-0 defeats to record their third success of the season, courtesy of a 6-4 victory over Honeywell ‘B’. This was a fine team effort from Unison, with Mike Brierley and Steve Collins registering two wins apiece and Andy Hey contributing a single.
Pete Fowler and Ken Hayes boasted doubles for Honeywell.
Glodwick continued their seemingly unrelenting march to the title with an 8-2 win over Birley Moss.
Amir Hussain was player-of-the-match — he bagged a treble — while Mark Ramsbottom and Maj Tubassum had doubles on the day.
Hollinwood ‘B’ had a busy week in Division Two. They kicked off with a 7-3 defeat of a strong Honeywell ‘D’ team. George Jones won all his three, and he was supported by Jack Christian’s two and one from Joe Redikin.
The Honeywell team of Paul Carter, Peter Buckley and Howard Travis all won one each.
Hollinwood went one better against Stanley Square, winning 8-2. Christian claimed the individual honours with three wins. Jones and Redikin backed him with a double. Glen Chadwick and John Robertson supplied the consolation wins for Stanley Square.
