Singin’ in the rain!

Football HOLLINWOOD were singing in the rain as they won for only the second time in Division One of the FBT Manchester League.

Choreographing the moves as the rain fell heavily was the Gene Kelly of the side, Andrew Walker.

Hollinwood, who have been on a worrying downward trend since a six-point deduction last season, danced their way to victory against a Pennington side that had lost only once all season.

This was a fantastic result for the local side and, according to Hollinwood boss Ken Evans, was down to the leadership qualities of several players.

Evans, now in his 31st year with the club and normally second team manager, took charge of the first team in the absence of James Kinsey.

Evans said: “It’s been a difficult time for us and I think that the six points we lost after beating Wigan twice certainly produced a negative effect. Hopefully now we can move forward.

“These were atrocious conditions and you have to give credit to both teams for playing in them.

“All I asked of the lads was to give 100 per cent, and we went out with that attitude.”

There was a major doubt about the match starting due to floodlighting hitch at Chapel Road. The referee started at 3pm when light was already fading, and the ref was satisfied there would be enough to see it through.


WAYNE Dean grabbed a couple of goals as his Royton Town side cruised to a 4-0 home victory against AFC Monton in the FBT Manchester League Premier Division.

Completing Town’s tally on a day when few games survived the persistent downpours were Alan Beckett and Craig Schumann. Mark Howard’s Town, now in fourth place, visit mid-table Dukinfield Town tomorrow. A victory would edge them closer to the top two, Prestwich Heys and Hindsford.

Springhead, fifth, are in the division’s leading game against Prestwich.
