Oldham in control

Aldwinians 12, Oldham 35

HIGH winds, driving rain and a heavy pitch don’t normally make for open, running rugby - but that is what Oldham produced for a terrific North Lancashire and Cumbria League win at Audenshaw rivals Aldwinians.

Oldham broke the deadlock after 17 minutes. The visitors charged free from their 22-metre line and Will Mellor accepted the final pass to dive over near the posts.

Callum Megram kicked the conversion and Oldham were up and running.

The half tuned into a real wrestling match and Oldham’s defence was excellent up to half time, when a small chink of daylight in the line allowed Aldwinians over for a converted try.

Shortly after the restart, Charlie Roscoe picked up a loose ball and raced 40 metres out of the Oldham defence. Gareth Barber carried on the move before putting Mellor in for his second try. Megram converted to fire the visitors into a 14-7 lead.

After 51 minutes the home side had a player sin-binned and it was to prove expensive for them as Oldham scored two quick tries. Megram was twice more effective with the boot before making a break down the left wing to send Ryan Pickles towards the line. The youngster drove over for a well-deserved try.

Megram made it five out of five with the boot to cap a great display, before there was just time for Aldwinians to notch a late consolation try.
