Hollinwood give their all in tough clash

HOLLINWOOD were unable to follow up their previous week’s victory in Division Three West of the Pennine League.

There were mitigating circumstances, however.

Hollinwood were beaten 34-16 at home by a West Bowling ‘A’ side strengthened by a several first-team players after their game was postponed because of the weather.

The visitors had forged a 12-0 lead at Fields New Road, before Ellis Meline raced in for a try in the corner.

Bowling responded, though, with well-worked tries which took their tally up to 22 points.

Meline got his name on the scoresheet again — his try was converted by Luke Skilling — to give Hollinwood a glimmer of hope.

But as half-time approached, Bowling went in again for a goaled effort to lead 28-10.

Hollinwood struggled to contain their well-drilled opponents, and their task became even more difficult when Matt McCullough had to go off with a chest problem.

Ashley Dixon tackled himself into the ground, along with Peter Davies, who was a constant thorn in Bowling’s side.

Liam Parker scored a long-distance try for Hollinwood, again converted by Skilling, who is improving week on week.

The hosts, displaying a tremendous work-rate, restricted Bowling to a converted try late on in the second period.

Dixon and Davies could not be separated for Hollinwood’s man-of-the-match award.

o HIGGINSHAW are riding high at the top of the table — but they were left kicking their heels last weekend.

Opponents Bradford Victoria Rangers ‘A’ were unable to raise a team, which handed Higgy a 30-0 win per competition rules.
