Respite for promoted Uppermill

Oldham Table Tennis League
PROMOTED Uppermill ‘A’ managed their first win of the Oldham Table Tennis League season against fellow Division One strugglers Werneth ‘A’.

Dennis Taylor was man of the match with three wins and was ably supported by Gary Crossley (2) and Mark Simpson.

Werneth’s resistance was led by Mick Pellowe, who notched a double.

In Division Two, there was a tight match at Hyde where the ‘B’ team went down 6-4 defeat against Hollinwood ‘B’.

The home side’s Neil Coppard won twice, including an excellent verdict over the experienced George Jones. Steve Hilton also won twice for Hyde.

All the Hollinwood team scored points, with two for George Jones and Eddie Simon, and a single for Joe Rediken. Simon and Jones combined to win the doubles and seal the victory for Hollinwood.

Hyde’s ‘A’ team also had a tough match against Grotton, but managed to prevail 6-4. The main architect of the win was Geoff Ogden, who scored a treble.

Owls ‘A’, who had been bottom of Division Three, enjoyed a tremendous 9-1 victory over fellow strugglers Werneth ‘C’.

Phil Tamworth and Steve Cocker scored maximums, while Colin Ogden added a double.

Hollinwood ‘C’ went to the top of the table with 8-3 and 7-3 victories over Deaf ‘B’ and Unison ‘C’ respectively. Dave Jefferson maintained his unbeaten start to the season by scoring a treble in both matches.

Division Four action saw Uppermill ‘D’ manage a narrow 6-4 victory over Pollards ‘C’ despite Fred Pickles winning three singles matches and a doubles with Graham Mather for the latter.

And the top clash in Division Five between Our Lady’s and Owls ‘B’ resulted in a 7-3 win for the Owls to extend their advantage at the summit.
