FOOTBALL: SPRINGHEAD produced a sensational comeback in their FBT Manchester League Gilgryst Cup tie against Dukinfield Town.
Trailing 4-0 with 25 minutes to go, Springhead looked dead and buried. But the team rallied and went on to take a 5-4 victory - which sets up a mouthwatering quarter-final tie against Oldham rivals Royton Town.
A shambolic first half performance saw ’Head fall behind after 15 minutes when the Dukinfield forward finished with a good header. They were two up when a poor defensive free-kick fell to the same player who notched again.
On the stroke of half time Dukinfield made it 3-0 with a fine free-kick finish.
Dukinfield made it 4-0 on the hour mark, before ’Head began their dream comeback after 65 minutes when Ryan Fagan made it 4-1 with a neat finish.
Two minutes later sub Leighton Stephenson made it 4-2, and following that goal Dukinfield’s ’keeper was sent off following an altercation.
With ’Head smelling blood, they made it 4-3 with Fagan grabbing his second courtesy of a clever finish.
’Head grabbed the equaliser with eight minutes remaining as Paul Stevenson slotted home from the penalty spot.
The local side then completed their incredible comeback in the last minute as Gary Shaw finished neatly to make it 5-4.
