Firsts left chasing shadows

HOCKEY:
WITH an England youth coach and players on show, unbeaten Alderley Edge proved too strong for Oldham Ladies Hockey Club firsts, who lost 8-0 at Newman College.
The hosts knew they had their work cut out before start of the game. Alderley had won eight matches on the spin and scored 39 goals. Oldham were still hopeful they would be able to start first-team utility player Yvonne Jackson’s 50th birthday bash after the game with a bang.
But they were unable to cope with Alderley’s pace and movement. The visitors had raced into a 4-0 lead by half-time.
Daisy May Ward was Oldham’s player of the game at centre-back, admirably keeping Alderley’s youth international forward relatively quiet. But the Cheshire side had too many talented players and it was a case of damage limitation in the second period. Despite her best efforts, ’keeper Sarah Simpson conceded four more goals. Oldham were awarded two short corners, but were unable to breach a well-drilled backline.
OLDHAM are recruiting new members and would welcome both adults and under-16s (boys and girls) to the Thursday night training sessions at Newman College on Broadway (7pm-8pm).
