Boxing:

THE prospect of defeat against Manchester derby rival Adrian Gonzalez hasn’t even occurred to Jon Kays ahead of the fierce rivals’ WBO inter-continental lightweight title clash on Saturday.

Billed as a grudge match following recent social media banter, Kays and Gonzalez are set for what could be one of the closest fights in the Frank Warren-promoted “World War III” show at the Manchester Arena.

At 32, Hurst Cross ace Kays is aware a defeat to California-born Gonzalez (24) could raise questions about his professional career - but that’s a scenario ‘Two Smokes’ isn’t even contemplating.

He said: “Not getting the right result hasn’t even entered my mind, but at the same time, I’ve got to be realistic. I’m 32, I’ve got a plumbing business to look after and I’m also starting to go into schools to train children. It won’t be the end of the world if I lose.

“But it’s my time and that belt will be wrapped around my waist on Saturday. After that, who knows? It’s always been my dream to win a Lonsdale belt.”

A younger man with just one defeat in 12 pro fights so far, Gonzalez appears to be the favourite for the 10-round contest, but cool Kays — who has lost only four times in 26 bouts — isn’t concerned.

“Gonzalez thinks he’s just going to walk through me on Saturday, but everyone is going to be surprised at how big and strong I’ll be at lightweight,” Kays delared.
