Semi-final heartache for Stamford

GOLF:
STAMFORD suffered an agonising defeat in the semi-final of the Dunham Forest Knock-Out.
Having qualified to take part in finals day at the Altrincham course for the first time in 30 years, Stamford gave it a real go in their shoot-out with Bramall Park. There were wins for Phil Hudson, Spencer Yates and Taylor Yates, but these were matched by victories from Alan Boswell, George Seed and Chris Murthil. That left it to the two professionals to attempt to clinch a place in the final. Watched by a big crowd at the 18th hole, Park’s Craig Daggitt produced a sensational shot to get within six feet and nervelessly holed the birdie putt to force a play-off against Mark Smith, whose 50-foot effort for victory missed by a whisker.
The players marched on to the first play-off hole and it was Daggitt who clinched it with two solid putts after Smith’s third shot missed the green. The final was won by Leigh, who set a record of five victories in the Alliance competition, beginning in 1992 and continuing in 2010, 2012 and 2013 before this latest success.
ASHTON’S Louisa Brunt will compete in the finals of the Daily Telegraph BMW Junior Tournament at Quinta do Lago on Portugal’s Algarve coast from October 14-16.
The teenager will be taking part in her second finals, having booked her place with a three-under-par return in the qualifiers at Northenden. She is one of nine girls in the line-up.
Sixth in last year’s finals on the Algarve, Louisa has designs on earning a US golf scholarship.
THE Oldham Ladies’ Golf Association past captains’ competition, held at Oldham Golf Club, was won by the host club’s Edythe Turner (left).
Runner up was Oldham’s Bev Scholes, while another Oldham member, Mary Buckley, won the putting competition. All five OLGA clubs were represented.
